Latino Leadership Program - Accepting Applications

The Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its Latino Leadership Program through July 15th, 2018.  Entering its 13th year, this highly-regarded program builds the capacity and networks of existing and emerging Latino leaders dedicated to improving economic and social well-being in the Latino community.

The Chamber’s Latino Leadership Program is designed to:\

  • Develop leadership skills.
  • Enhance understanding of economic and community vitality issues.
  • Expand network of leaders and resources in the Latino and wider community.
  • Increase the number of Latino leaders in public, private, and nonprofit organizations.

Each year approximately 20 individuals are selected to participate in the Chamber’s 12-month Latino Leadership Program. Participants attend a monthly full-day session that includes workshop style engagement and interaction with leading organizations in the region. The program includes project-based learning to integrate content and build skills. Growing Small Businesses Globally: Meet Virginia Joplin

Virginia Joplin started working as a freelance translator before she graduated from Linfield College. Fluent in both Spanish and French, demand for her translation skills was high. Throughout college and in the few years after graduation, Joplin worked in settings that maximized her bilingual and technology skills and navigated a world that increasingly demanded fluency in different languages and cultures.

Ultimately, she spent one year at a translation company armed with a list of five things she wanted to learn and apply to her own freelance venture. These five things included learning how to use translation software and understanding the qualities sought-after in a translator. In August of 2001, Joplin started her own translation services agency.

Verbio has grown from a one-woman operation to a robust language-services firm that brings in about $750,000 a year, employs nine professionals at its Beaverton office, as well as several hundred contract linguists.

As of today, 13 organizations have signed up to participate in the Greater Portland Tech Challenge.  There's still an opportunity for problem-solving tech firms to sign up. See more details in an article published by the Business Tribune.

Greater Portland Inc and the Technology Association of Oregon are collaborating to produce the region’s first mobility tech challenge. The inaugural Greater Portland Tech Challenge pairs technology firms with transit agencies, governments, community organizations, transportation companies and engineering/professional services firms to explore technology solutions to the region’s mobility and transportation challenges.

Through this year’s mobility focused tech challenge we will explore some of the most interesting and confounding problems facing this region.  Thanks to PGE and Daimler for supporting this program. For tech challenge details and the "rules of the road" visit http://www.greaterportland2020.com/techchallenge.
